Located on central Vancouver Island, Cathedral Grove is home to some of the largest trees in Canada. The Douglas fir shown here, with the deeply furrowed bark, may be around 800 years old and stands over 200 feet tall. The thick bark protects the tree from fast-moving fires and various insect pests. Various shade tolerant species, like the young hemlock beside it, grow up under the towering canopy, forming a multilayered forest.
