Artist's Description
Located on central Vancouver Island, Cathedral Grove is home to some of the largest trees in Canada. The Douglas fir shown here, with the deeply furrowed bark, may be around 800 years old and stands over 200 feet tall. The thick bark protects the tree from fast-moving fires and various insect pests. Various shade tolerant species, like the young hemlock beside it, grow up under the towering canopy, forming a multilayered forest.
About Randy Hall
Randy Hall is a Vancouver Island photographer specializing in nature photography, whether it is capturing natural settings such as seascapes or forest landscapes or the plants and animals that inhabit this part of British Columbia. What a fantastic shot and gorgeous scene!! I hate to see those logging show on tv these days! I get so mad at the way they clear cut forrests. I wish we didn't have to cut any trees, but I suppose that is too much to ask for. v.f Love your description as well!
Randy Hall replied:
