This shot was captured this morning before the sun cleared the horizon. Light was low, but we had a very cooperative subject. Knowing that herons are known for standing extremely still, I thought I'd treat it as a still life. I wanted a sharp image, so I didn't want to sacrifice anything with ISO, and went with ISO-100.

Using a tripod and cable release, manual focus and taking advantage of focus zoom to make sure I got the eye. I also wanted to stay in the "sweet spot" for aperture to make sure I got some nice detail in the feathers, so I stayed at f/9. I knew that would mean my shutter speed of 0.4 seconds wouldn't be fast enough to "freeze" anything, but as mentioned, herons stand still.
